There are two parks in my community, but my kid loves the park that is a 20 mile drive from our place, the farther of the two choices. Why? He says it's because of Winnie the Pooh. Now, the famed Disney character isn't really in that park. There's no mascot playing the said character. Instead, that park has a playground the grounds of which are reinforced with playground mulch displaying Winnie the Pooh's happy face on its surface. Lemon green and light orange... those are the color schemes of the playground mulch therein, and in the middle of each block, Winnie the Pooh's smiling image.

This led me to believe that the design of playground mulch plays an important role in the enjoyment that children will have while spending time in the playground. This belief is deeply rooted in child psychology. Children, after all, are stimulated by visual catalysts. They love to watch cartoons because drawn characters possess more color. They prefer the brightly painted toys as opposed to the drab ones. The primary colored crayons are always the ones that get shorter faster. And the playgrounds that have colorful, beautifully designed rubber mulch are the ones where kids have the most fun.

Hence, in conceptualizing an outdoor playground, the design of playground mulch should be given much importance. Rubber mulches, of course, are primarily used because of the safety they provide. Their anti-slip surface and the cushion the material is capable of giving will greatly reduce injuries that may be caused by unfortunate mishaps. But the aesthetic appeal of rubber mulches should not be neglected, especially since the same adds to the enjoyment that the kids will experience.

Some rubber mulch manufacturers have been granted the license to use popular characters that children in this day and age are familiar with. Cartoon Network's stable of timeless cartoons, from the Hannah Barbara classics like Scooby Doo, Yogi Bear, the Flintstones and the Jetsons are well represented. The current crop of cartoons is also present, led by the Justice League Unlimited, the Powerpuff Girls, and Dexter. Disney characters have also been seen on the face of some rubber mulches, as was the case in my personal experience with Winnie the Pooh's giddy face.

Decorated rubber mulches add a layer of excitement for the kids. They'll adore the playground more if it contains some sights that they have come to love, and the every moment spent in such a playground is sure to be a moment that the kids will cherish for a long, long time.
